Bassendean Mayor backs change ahead of election

BASSENDEAN Mayor John Gangell hopes the council will introduce a caretaker period.

Cr Gangell said he intended to bring the issue to the next council meeting.

He said he was not aware that a council could adopt a caretaker period policy until just before the recent local government elections.

“If implemented, no major decision would be made during the campaigning period before an election,” he said.

“During an election, there can be pressure to move items that can be a contentious issue in the community.”

Cr Gangell said he had invited the minister to the Town to shed more light on the process.

“I would like some clarification,” he said.

Cr Gangell said he had not yet discussed the caretaker policy with other councillors.
