Bassendean salon earns sustainable title

Kristie LimEastern Reporter

A BASSENDEAN salon is recycling 95 per cent of waste from haircuts after becoming recognised as a sustainable salon this year.

Bassendean Hair & Makeup Studio joined the Sustainable Salons program in May and are looking to continue its sustainable initiatives.

The program involves separating salon waste in five different bins and recycling it.

Excess chemical waste is sent to a chemical recycler and neutralised into recycled water that is then used for roadworks.

Plastics are recycled and used for outdoor furniture and glasses and underground sheeting to protect the NBN.

Ponytails are redirected to charitable wig-making services or made into hair blooms to clean up oil.

All proceeds from recycling are donated to OzHarvest to fund meals for disadvantaged people.

Owner Janine Radford encouraged other salons to join the program.

“It is great for the environment and it makes me feel good and also our customers as well,” she said.

“People who have 20cm off, those ponytails are donated to wigs for children with cancer and we have had a fantastic response from that.

“There are people who come in purely for their haircut for that.

The Town of Bassendean is very big on environmental issues and recycling.”
