‘Big brother’ laws unnecessary

Cr Kenyon voted against Vincent Mayor John Careys motion for more transparency in local government at the WA Local Government Association general meeting last week.

The former Bayswater mayor voted on behalf of council along with Councillor Barry McKenna.

Cr Kenyon said improving transparency should be up to individual local governments.

Youve got enough laws and regulations with the Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC), Local Government Act, Local Government Department, and its up to each individual council if they want to have their meetings recorded or different things like that, he said.

Vincents problems are associated with the City of Vincent, not with any other local government and they come out and take the big brother approach that this is needed for all local government. We have nothing to hide.

Earlier this year, Bayswater Council voted against having their meetings recorded and published.
