A PERTH paramedic is after sponsorship and volunteers to help keep a crucial motorbike medical delivery service afloat.

David Vance is the co-ordinator of AusServ, a service based on Britain’s successful ‘Blood Bike’ model.

The service uses specially adapted motorbikes to transport medical samples, like blood, spinal fluids, anti-venom and other tissue, using World Health Organisation guidelines and in a time-critical manner.

Mr Vance said his work helped him see there was a growing need for a such a service in Perth.

“Working in a paramedic role within the metro area, you see different avenues and areas that you wouldn’t do if you were a member of the general public,” he said.

“We found that the government spends hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on unqualified taxi drivers who pick up these blood specimens and samples.

“We work under World Health Organisation guidelines.

“Our service operates evenings from 7pm to 6am the next day, all weekend and public holidays.

“Although we are just a bunch of passionate bikers, who have a love for riding and the helping of the local community, there is actually a real structure and a proper infrastructure behind us.”

But Mr Vance said AusServ needed to attract sponsors and bike-riding volunteers to help keep the show on the road.

“We rely on our own funds, public donations and corporate sponsorship,” he said.

“To continue the service the way that we do, we need a lending hand.

“We are actively seeking out stalls in shopping centres and community markets to promote who we are to keep us on the road.

“As well as funding, we need more volunteers.

“Volunteering with us can be in many forms.

“We need people to ride our response motorcycles, take control of our call handling needs and even help us raise funds at sausage sizzles and stalls at community events.”
