The money can be used for educational costs such as computers, text books, sports equipment, music lessons and uniforms.

Ms Jenkin said her budget was quite tight, having made a decision to work part-time in order to help support her children.

‘That decision is really difficult because it means that you do stay on the borderline and you are cutting it fine for a number of years,’ she said.

‘When you do go full-time you want to make sure the income is worth it.’

To be eligible for the program, adults must have a Centrelink health care card or pensioner concession card, have a regular income and are either in vocational education or have children at school.

Recruitment closes on December 31.
