BASSENDEAN’S Foreshore Environmental Action Group’s (FEAG) desire to build a bridge connecting the Town of Bassendean with the City of Belmont could become a reality after Bassendean councillors agreed to receive the report and consider feasibility and potential partnerships.
A notice of motion from retiring councillor Gerry Pule supported by councillors followed a deputation on the “Connecting Communities – Connecting Bridge Proposal” presented by FEAG committee member Lea Bawden.
The concept would see a bridge over the Swan River from the Ashfield Parade area to Ron Courtney Island and on to Garvey Park in Ascot.
It would also include a small bridge at South Guildford across the Helena River.
“The sentiments behind the Connecting Communities Connecting Bridge idea lie in the desire to connect our upper Swan River communities and provide direct access to open space and the facilities available on both sides of the river,” Ms Bawden said.
“It would provide the opportunity for the stakeholder councils to work together on a community-centred project that is of mutual benefit, provide the opportunity to promote the area to national and international visitors and see the now disconnected communities connected and able to have direct engagement at council events on either side of the river.
Mrs Bawden said the group had presented the concept in 2006 and while it was well received, circumstances beyond the group’s control saw it halted.
She now hoped councillors would see it as an opportunity to spearhead an innovative project that would be embraced and be part of its contribution for its 2032 Vision for Bassendean.
Mayor John Gangell said the concept was a very exciting proposal for the community and the broader eastern metropolitan region.
“This proposal will interconnect our communities together across the river and will ensure everybody has the opportunity to enjoy the best of our riverside parks and green spaces,” he said.
City of Belmont acting chief executive Robin Garrett said the City would look at any proposal from the Town of Bassendean on this matter, based on its merits.
