Canberra push for NBN

Julian WrightEastern Reporter

Armed with a survey completed by 63 businesses in Malaga, chief executive Clive Haddow and vice-president Felicity Orr took their case to Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull last month.

Mr Haddow said Mr Turnbull was receptive to their campaign. "No promises have been made, but we were told that many small businesses have put their case forward for the NBN," he said.

We will keep pushing. We hope to have Malaga pushed further up the line for the rollout of the NBN; we feel that being a semi-industrial area, Malaga is sometimes forgotten.

"More than 3000 businesses exist in Malaga compared with 809 in 1997. This is a prime area to move up the list of the NBN, but so far nobody is listening while businesses are losing in productivity gains and growth."

Mr Haddow said the group had support from Perth MHR Alannah MacTiernan and West Swan MLA Rita Saffioti.

The survey found 95.2 per cent of businesses would be helped with a better internet connection, with 82.5 per cent saying their efficiency would be improved with a faster internet connection.

"In this day and age, this upgrade in a business hub of a major city required immediate action," a business owner said in the survey.

Another said they bought new cables and modem to improve connection speed, but it remained the same.

"Some days worse than others (and) others are experiencing the same," the business owner said.

In April, Ms MacTiernan announced Bassendean was added to the NBN rollout, but NBN Co would be relying on Telstra's old copper network.
