City of Bayswater goes against businesses to approve a temporary closure of Lyric Lane

Toyah ShakespeareEastern Reporter

CITY of Bayswater Council voted against an officer recommendation in order to temporarily close Lyric Lane in Maylands for construction works.

Applicant Michiel de Ruyter requested a 15-month closure of Lyric Lane due to a public safety risk during the construction of a hospitality and live music venue.

The lane, at the back of Guildford Road, is 3m wide and one-way.

Four objections were received from nearby businesses that objected to loss of access to rear parking and a servicing area for deliveries and waste pick-up.

However, Councillor Catherine Ehrhardt successfully moved an alternative motion to approve the closure.

She said the tight corner would leave the City open to liability issues.

“We need developments like this to continue,” she said.
