CITY of Bayswater’s place managers have urged community groups to apply for $40,000 worth of funding for large-scale events in the City’s four town centres.

In February, Bayswater and Maylands place manager Emma Snow and Morley and Noranda place manager Jennie Arts were appointed to work with businesses and community groups to develop each town centre’s uniqueness and attract visitors.

The funding forms part of the City’s Major Town Events Grants Program.

Ms Snow said funding community events was “critical” in activating different public spaces beyond the main strip of the town centres.

Ms Arts welcomed council’s budget allocation and hoped to see as many applications as possible.

“We have two rounds of expressions of interest, the first round is open right now and we are encouraging groups to apply for it,” she said.

“All of the applications that we get we will then take to council and council will assess it.

“We reviewed the previous street festival policy into a major town centre events policy and the idea behind that was we could see different type of events.”

Mayor Barry McKenna said the funding applied to any event or activity that attracted more than 2000 people.

“Our retail centres are more than just shops, they are at the very heart of community life,” he said.

“They mirror the cultural background of the surrounding community and offer us the opportunity to indulge in authentic cuisine and experience different traditions right on our doorstep.”

Applications for events held between January and June 2018 will close on August 29, with another round to open in January for events taking place in the second half of 2018.
