Consul General for Malta to visit Bassendean for specialised consular services

Kristie LimEastern Reporter

Consul General Victor Grech will be introducing Consul-on-the-Move (COTM), which was launched in July 2016, in a bid to reach out to Maltese citizens living outside of Victoria, NSW and Canberra.

COTM is an initiative formed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Malta, the Malta High Commission in Canberra and the consul generals in Sydney and Melbourne.

WA Consul General for Malta Paul Calleja said applying and renewing a Maltese passport was difficult and expensive before COTM was introduced.

“When Malta adopted the biometric passport in 2008 it became part of the world’s elite in terms of passport security,” he said.

“The great benefit to Perth’s Maltese community of COTM is the significant savings for them in time, money and effort in obtaining such things as passports, special visas and dual citizenship.

“Prior to the concept of COTM being introduced in July 2016, residents of areas beyond Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne had to travel to these centres to obtain special consular services.”
