Councillors last week voted to appoint contractor Building Civil and Landscapes Pty Ltd to start work on the project even though Cr Bridges said he was extremely disappointed by the decision.

Cr Bridges said his success at the recent election was because he promised Bassendean residents he would fight to have the war memorial relocation quashed.

During debate, he said the process had been done in secrecy and he had given no input to the final plans.

‘The decisions have been taken behind closed doors and the only people who have had a contribution to this are the Returned Service League,’ he said.

Councillor Anne Brinkworth disputed Cr Bridges’ claim, saying council was not the ‘Secret Service’.

‘I don’t think there was any secrecy,’ she said.

Cr Brinkworth added that had the relocation not taken place, there would be complaints from resident in years to come.

‘Once the reform comes in and the Government takes over, you will have high density down there (BIC Reserve) and in 20 years time it will be a slum,’ she said.

The relocation of the war memorial and introduction of new civic gardens are just two of the imminent changes included in the Town’s revitalisation strategy.
