Dungeon Youth Centre in Ballajura gets grant worth $45,500

DUNGEON Youth Centre in Ballajura will receive a $45,500 grant to reach out to more young people through its after-school programs.

St. George Foundation will provide the centre with the grant at an event on September 4.

The centre’s early intervention programs targeted young people aged from eight to 12 from culturally diverse backgrounds and offered a safe drop-in service.

Dungeon Youth Centre youth service manager Daniel Pisani said the current program was at its capacity of 50 kids and had a waiting list.

“This generous grant will mean we now have funding to not only reduce our waitlist, but also provide targeted workshops to help youth address social inclusion,” he said.

“These workshops will run until the end of January 2018 alongside our usual recreational drop in service.”

Mr Pisani said the program started in 2012 but ran on and off since then due to lack of funding.

“The grant will cater for more staffers including a project coordinator and more casuals,” he said.

“To have just 50 young people with a ratio of one to 10, we are going to need a lot more staff because this age group is a bit more high maintenance.”

St. George Foundation’s current round of community grants are open until September 29.
