A REGIONAL local government that covers the City of Bayswater and Town of Bassendean has been recognised for its efforts to employ and retain people with a disability.

The Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) won the government employer category of the Leading Edge Employer Awards.

The awards aim to acknowledge employers who have gone above and beyond to create opportunities for people with a disability.

Three people with a disability have been recruited through Edge Employment Solutions to work at the EMRC’s new commercial and industrial waste sorting facility.

Funding through the Lighthouse Project will be used to provide disability-focused training and development programs.

EMRC chief executive Peter Schneider said they aimed to provide an inclusive and safe workplace and the grant will improve disability confidence and a “culture of inclusiveness”.
