Get pizza the MND fundraising action

Lauren PilatEastern Reporter

The campaign was developed in honour of Jason MacNish's mother Leila who was diagnosed with MND " a degenerative disease affecting the motor cells resulting in muscle weakness, paralysis and impaired speech, swallowing and breathing " seven years ago.

The MacNish family will hold their second annual "Pig and Pizza Bonanza" on September 5, from 11am ahead of their major event next year, climbing Mt Kilimanjaro.

Mr MacNish said the idea behind the bonanza was that people could "make absolute pigs of themselves" enjoying spit roasted pigs and wood-fired pizzas while donating to a fantastic cause.

He said when it was suggested the family could climb Africa's highest peak it was as if a spark had been ignited.

"It was only natural that we decided to support MNDAWA, so Climb 4 MND was born," Mr MacNish said.

"So far 10 people have joined the Climb 4 MND, with each climber aiming to raise $10,000 for the MND Association of WA."

Now 73, Mrs MacNish has defied the odds to live with MND for seven years. Mr MacNish said without the tireless support from the MND Association of WA his mother's life would be a miserable prison sentence.

"There are so many of these types of diseases that destroy families, that unfortunately people just don't find out about until someone they know is affected, and because it has such a short life expectancy it receives very little support," he said. "That's why we need all the support possible."
