Gravit8 Event Cancelled

Julian WrightEastern Reporter

COMPLICATIONS during irrigation works on Bassendean Oval has led to the cancellation of youth event Gravit8 for its 10th anniversary.

The skate and scooter competition, video game trailer, Urban Art demonstration, temporary tattoos, bucking bull and DJ booked in for the annual event due to take place February 13 have been scrapped after “unfavourable ground conditions” put a hiccup in the construction of an artesian bore at the oval.

Town of Bassendean chief executive Bob Jarvis said contractor Western Irrigation alerted them to the issue in the week beginning January 18.

“Western Irrigation are currently constructing an estimated 220 metre deep artesian bore,” he said.

He said works began in November and was due for completion by end of December 2015.

“During the constructing the artesian bore the contractor advised the Town they encountered some unfavourable ground conditions that have required recalibration of drilling equipment, modification of bore hole construction plan, and as a consequence, this has resulted in significant delays,” he said.

Last year’s event cost $12,500 and attracted about 400 people.

Gravit8 was first held in 2006.
