HAMPTON Senior High School’s finest theatre students will showcase their talents as part of a musical production this week.

The students, led by teacher and musical director Doug Wilson, have created a remake of the fairytale, The Princess and the Pea.

Their production, called Once Upon a Mattress, is a comedy featuring a princess who is unable to sleep on a bed of many mattresses when a tiny pea is placed underneath the bottom mattress.

It will be shown at the school from August 8 to Saturday 10.

Mr Wilson, who has been directing musicals at the school for 34 years, said he enjoyed providing the opportunity for students to appreciate musical theatre and pursue further studies.

“I like to expose the students to lesser known Broadway productions of the past and to foster their interest in this particular form of theatre,” he said.

“It has been rewarding to see some of our former students appear on the professional stage, study at WAAPA or continue in the entertainment industry.

“Some of our former participants in musical theatre include Samantha Jade (former X Factor winner), Warwick Reid (appeared in the Australian premiere production of Miss Saigon), Chris Dodson (appeared in productions in London and Germany) and Courtney Hough (recently appeared in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival).”
