BAYSWATER artist Shirley Winstanley has drawn inspiration from household goods including eggs, flowers, boots and pots for her display at the upcoming group exhibition, In and Around the Home.

Winstanley will join organiser Willemina Foeken and fellow artists Georgia Efford, Mary Cowell and Irene Osborne at the exhibition held at the Zig Zag Gallery in Kalamunda from April 28 to May 13.

The exhibition will bring together different paintings, including still life pieces and items from the garden.

Winstanley, who previously exhibited in Italy, said she hoped to attract about 70 people at the opening and hundreds of people throughout the exhibition period.

“We want to expose our style, our work, ourselves,” she said.

“Hopefully (I can) sell one or two paintings – that is an incentive to go out and buy some more canvases and keep painting.”

Winstanley will be showcasing paintings that she creates “on the spot”, including Claude’s Boots, which depicts a Mundaring resident’s pair of surgical boots, Nola’s glass, sunflowers, saucepan stack and a fish bought from the Morley markets.

“The sunflowers – I actually bought them down the road ready to paint and several days went by and I thought I am still going to paint them because they are on their way out,” she said.

“I was looking for a stack of cups but I did not have a stack of cups that I thought looked pretty enough so just went and got a saucepan (stack).”

Winstanley said she started painting in her mid-20s after she joined an art therapy class at a psychiatric hospital in Melbourne, where her friend was staying.

However, years after, she found out about her family’s rich artistic history through her aunt.

“My father used to paint but I didn’t know until he long stopped painting,” she said.

“I apparently had a famous uncle who did the Rosella on the Rosella sauce bottles and Arnott’s biscuits – he was a famous commercial artist.

“I am just compelled to paint.”
