Indigenous service honoured

ABORIGINAL and Torres Straight Islander servicemen and women have been recognised with a commemorative plaque at the Maylands war memorial.

Indigenous men and women dedicated to the war effort were honoured with a recent ceremony, including the unveiling of a plaque and a wreath-laying service.

More than 130 people showed their respects to the victims of war, including Aboriginal elders and representatives from Parliament, the City of Bayswater, Reconciliation WA, Veteran Affairs, RSL, Outcare Youth Services, Honouring Indigenous War Veterans and WA Police.

As part of the ceremony, poppies were laid, a smoking ceremony was held, Aboriginal Soldier was sung by John Forrest Secondary College students and traditional Aboriginal dances were performed by Wadumbah Aboriginal Dance Group.
