KIARA College will compete against the state’s top science students at the upcoming Synergy Schools Solar Challenge grand final.
The college’s Year 8 team came second to York District High School in the east-metro semi final and qualified for the grand final.
The team were among 6000 students from more than 150 schools across the state preparing for the race, which aims to increase student participation in science and engineering projects.
Stem and science teacher Cheryl Hamilton said the bar was set very high as the team placed second in last year’s grand final.
“They were all very excited to make it through and started strategising in the taxi on the way back to school as well as trying to work out why they only came second,” she said.
Team member Joyce Marquez said she had “monsters in her stomach, not just butterflies” in the semi-final.
Fellow member Bailey Law said he was proud of the team’s achievements so far.
The grand final will be held at Optus Stadium on April 9.
