Kilometre of fishing line among waste

On Sunday, May 18, the Swan River Trust teamed up with the City of Bayswater, Clean Marine Keep Australia Beautiful, Native Animal Rescue and Recfishwest to clean up Hinds Reserve.

The aim of the day was to spread the message that discarded fishing waste could kill or injure animals.

Trust communications manager Mark Thornley said that stormy conditions failed to deter a band of 50 volunteers from making the Bayswater foreshore cleaner and safer.

‘It was a fantastic effort from all those involved and we hope to make this an annual event,’ he said.

‘All up, we removed more than a one 1km of fishing line, 34 hooks, 148 bait bags and more than 47 bags of general rubbish including 121 cans and bottles.’
