Malaga business owner looking forward to Variety 4WD Challenge

Kristie LimEastern Reporter

A WOODVALE couple’s passion for giving back to society has led to them gathering six cars to join the upcoming Variety 4WD Challenge.

Mark and Kim Gardiner have raised $130,000 in six years for Variety WA, through their participation in the Creative Car Cruise, Variety Bash and the 4WD Challenge – which they will be driving in for the first time this year.

The challenge will involve 20 4WDs leaving from Kalgoorlie on May 27 and travelling through West MacDonnell Ranges, Kings Canyon and Uluru.

There will be an opening cocktail function at Kalgoorlie’s York Hotel, schools visits, exploring private 4WD tracks in Kings Creek, an overnight stay at a Warakurna remote indigenous community and a sunset dinner overlooking Uluru.

Mr Gardiner, who co-owns Major Loss Builders in Malaga, said it took six weeks to get his 2016 Ford Ranger ready.

“I am looking forward to the actual four-wheel driving itself, the Variety family, the company of the people and the opportunity to meet disadvantaged and underprivileged children who are recipients of Variety WA,” he said.

“We are not wealthy people by any means but at our age, you don’t have a mortgage, you have got an opportunity to put some effort into giving back to society.

“It has become a passion at our age to give a bit back.”

The couple will join their friends in five other vehicles for the challenge, which runs from May 27 to June 3.
