YIRRA Yaakin Theatre Company will be performing its Kaarla Kaatijin performance at The Rise in Maylands to celebrate Naidoc Week.

The performance, which means ‘understand fire’ in Noongar language, uses Noongar knowledge and storytelling to deliver traditional stories about fire in an exciting and engaging way.

It is part of a series of events held by the City of Bayswater, with the goal of getting residents to contribute to the development of a reconciliation action plan.

Performance director Amy Smith said the show, which was part of a trilogy of children’s plays, was a revamped version of the first performance in 2012.

“Respect for another very important thing – each other,” she said.

“This is shown through the characters and what they go through and do to each other.”
