The 17-year-old said she was thrilled to have been selected in the national team after a successful 10-day tournament, where Western Australia edged out Queensland to take fourth place.

Connell said although the competition was rigorous, playing up to four games a day, she enjoyed the experience.

“I’ve represented the state before but this was my first time being selected in the Australian squad,” she said. “It got pretty tiring but it was great having the team cheering you on and it was good being around everyone.”

Scarborough Tennis Club coach Rick Willsmore said he was impressed with Connell’s development.

“I have coached Meg since she was seven years old and to see her excel at a national sporting competition and make the Australian team is a wonderful return on years of hard work together developing her game,” Willsmore said.

The Newman College student said she was unsure of where tennis would take her, but she hoped to continue in the sport in coming years.
