Mission Australia Youth Survey: call for participants in annual teen poll

Staff writerEastern Reporter

MISSION Australia is calling on young Western Australians aged 15-19 to take part in their annual nationwide survey to determine the issues most concerning to them.

The Mission Australia Youth Survey closes on July 31.

State Director Amanda Hunt said the uncertain political climate made it paramount that young people had their voices heard.

“Young Australians are our future and we must do everything we can to better understand and nurture their ambitions and support them to fulfil their potential,” Ms Hunt said.

“Our annual youth survey provides insight into their concerns and allows us to ensure they are considered by key decision makers including politicians, policy makers and community organisations.

“It enables us to understand life from the perspective of a young Australian in 2016 and engages them in voicing their thoughts to influence their future.”

The survey had almost 19,000 participants last year and Mission Australia wants to hear from more than 20,000 youths this year.

Last year’s chief concerns were alcohol and drugs, discrimination and the economy.

“This year we have included new focus questions to understand young people’s experiences of discrimination as well as questions focused on young people’s sense of community,” Ms Hunt said.

“Our previous surveys have highlighted that today’s youths experience major challenges including high unemployment and the rapidly changing job market, coping with stress, school or study problems, the rising cost of housing and concerns around alcohol, drugs and mental health.

“We believe Australia’s young people deserve a fulfilling and bright future and therefore we must encourage them to get involved and speak up and for us to really listen to what they have to say.”
