Morley residents called on to give blood on Australia Day morning

Toyah ShakespeareEastern Reporter

MORLEY residents are being urged to help save lives this Australia Day morning before they slap on a Southern Cross temporary tattoo and get cosy around a barbecue.

The Morley Blood Donor Service has only six people booked in to donate on Australia Day and the Australian Red Cross Blood Service is urging people to roll up their sleeves.

Service spokeswoman Jess Willet said the Morley centre was opening early in the morning so people could donate and still join in festivities after lunch.

“We’re asking Morley residents who have never donated blood before to become local legends and trade places with our regular donors who are away for the Australia Day public holiday,” she said.

“Unfortunately the need for blood doesn’t take a holiday for patients suffering from cancer, blood disorders and blood loss through road trauma and child birth.

“Blood donation takes just one hour – it’s such a short time spent saving three Australian lives.”

The Morley Blood Donor Centre will be open on Australia Day from 7.30am to 11.45am.
