Northern Redbacks Women’s Soccer Club under-15 team has bite

Kristie LimEastern Reporter

NORTHERN Redbacks Women’s Soccer Club under-15 division one team is “by far the best junior team” in club history, according to coach Neil Bennett.

Northern Redbacks’ seniors have won 14 league premierships and seven cup championships but the club introduced junior teams only three seasons ago.

The 16-member under-15s squad are top of the Football West U15 Girls Division 1 ladder with 12 wins, one draw and one loss.

The Redbacks will play in the U15 Cup final on September 3.

Bennett said with the league premiership locked in, the girls were a “good chance” to win the cup and top four competition.

“The fact that it is a brand new team, hardly any of them knew each other, they have done fantastically well,” he said.

“Even at the trials, we knew that we had very good players but having good players does not mean that you are going to have a good team; the girls have to gel with each other.

“Training sessions have been marked with a lot of laughter and they really seem to enjoy coming to training and playing with each other.”

Bennett said the players benefited from being mentored by the W-League players at the club.

“Fellow coach Ali McMurdo and I have tried to develop youth players so we can get them up into our senior team, who are in the cup final as well,” he said.

“Some of the girls have come out from the National Training Centre (NTC) system because they have been deemed not quite ready.”
