BASSENDEAN pizzeria Old Lira has joined the plastic-free movement in the Town of Bassendean.

The Town is the first council in WA to take part in the Boomerang Alliance’s Plastic Free Places program.

The pizzeria joins The Art of Food, Industry Diner, To the Woods, Holly Rayes Cafe, O2 Cafe, Cork and Bottle on the Town’s growing list of Plastic Free Champions.

Co-owner Fabio Nicotra said the business started reducing plastic takeaway containers and cutlery six months ago.

“Most of our businesses is takeaway, so we’re really conscious of how much single-use packaging is used,” he said.

“We’ve now got takeaway containers made from sugarcane (which is compostable), paper straws, biodegradable cutlery and napkins.

“Seeing the work WA Plastic Free has done with other eateries along Old Perth Road gave us the extra push we needed to make some changes we’d been talking about for a while.”
