PERTH’S northern suburbs have been the biggest claimers for storm damage as RAC data showed a big increase in claim payouts this winter.

Storm claims data has revealed a $4 million increase in claim payouts across the winter months compared to last year.

Perth’s northern suburbs appeared to suffer the most damage, with Ballajura, Morley, Dianella and Marangaroo topping the list as the areas with the most winter claims.

The south was also well represented, with Waikiki and Warnbro finishing at fifth and sixth respectively.

Following Perth’s highest August rainfall in more than five decades, the RAC received 7,434 storm claims, 52 percent more than the same period in 2017.

The RAC paid out more than $12 million over winter, an increase of roughly $4 million from last year.

The most common items damaged in a winter storm included fences and gates, ceilings, roofs and patios.

As WA transitions out of a wet winter, RAC home claims manager Glen Walker encouraged members to keep their homes prepared for a storm any time of the year.

“While we typically see damaging winds and heavy rain during the winter months, there is always the possibility of an unusual summer storm,” Mr Walker said.

“Our best advice to homeowners is to not be caught off guard, even during summer, and minimise potential risks around your front and backyards as much as possible.”
