“There has been a spike in Balga particularly, from June 13 to July 6, between 5pm to 8pm on the 372-bus route,” he said.

“Basically, Transperth has increased security and police have increased patrols along the 372-bus route,” Sgt Sprague said.

He said people who escaped lawful custody for misbehaviour could be imprisoned for up to seven years with an automatic penalty without a trial of three years in jail and a $36,000 fine.

Public Transport Authority spokesman David Hynes said all buses were fitted with toughened glass covered in a protective film.

“Our drivers also have access to duress alarms and two-way radios to call for help if they need it, and we have mobile security patrols to ensure a quick response to incidents.”

Mr Hynes said the PTA monitored such incidents and worked with police to detect and apprehend offenders.
