Residents can have say on Bassendean Activity Centre plans

Kristie LimEastern Reporter

BASSENDEAN residents will have the opportunity to view the preferred concept plans for the Bassendean Activity Centre developments from July to August.

Town of Bassendean and project developers LandCorp are putting on a road show of community events to present plans for Wilson Street, BIC Reserve and Bassendean Oval.

Following the first phase of community consultation, which lasted eight months, the second phase of consultation will run for two years.

In September, the Project Steering Group consisting of the Town of Bassendean, Swan Districts Football Club (SDFC) and LandCorp will consider the preferred plans and council will decide when to commence the statutory planning process.

Key factors include St Michael’s School retaining the use of the BIC Reserve for sports and play activities, removed fencing around Bassendean Oval to provide access to green space, and inclusion of new amenities.

About 14 new parking bays will be created along Wilson Street and nine in Park Lane.

Bassendean Tennis Club, Bassendean Bowling Club, the war memorial and SDFC will remain at their current locations.

Town of Bassendean Mayor John Gangell said the project would transform the Town into a “sought-after place to live”.

“This will provide Bassendean with more housing options for residents looking to live in the town centre or downsize as well as creating increased opportunities for commercial growth, employment and improved public open spaces within our community,” he said.

SDFC chief executive officer Tom Bottrell said he looked forward to upgrading the club’s facilities.

“We want to continue to offer use of our venue to organisations such as Swan Districts Rotary Club, education department as well as local residents whilst exploring new commercial ventures such as childcare opportunities,” he said.

LandCorp chief executive Frank Marra said the concept plans responded to priorities proposed by the Community Working Group, a group of 31 residents.

The road show starts on July 23 at Swan Districts Football Club and Hawaiian Bassendean Shopping Centre and continues on July 31 at the Perth Road Markets.

There will also be events held at the tennis and bowls clubs, St Michael’s School, Bassendean Seniors and Community Centre and Bassendean Youth Services.
