APPLICATIONS for two memorial scholarships funded by Bayswater and Noranda Community Bank are open.

Two successful students will receive either the John D’Orazio or Ian McClelland Memorial Scholarships, which both provide $2000 in funding for one year.

Depending on academic performance, the scholarship may be renewed in the second year of studies.

The scholarships are designed to help students, who are offered a full-time university place and experience financial or social challenges, pay for education costs.

John Forrest Secondary College graduates Frankie Sollis, of Bayswater, and Nikita Stankoski, of Morley, are the current scholarship holders.

Ms Sollis completed her first year of social work at Curtin University while Ms Stankoski wrapped up her first year in law and society at the University of Western Australia.

Senior branch manager Sean Kay said the scholarships were launched because the branch believed students deserved opportunities to achieve their dreams.

“An investment in education yields great long-term dividends and by helping young people gain access to tertiary education, the returns to the student, their families and the local community are significant,” he said.

“Over the years, we have formed great relationships with the recipients and their feedback is that the scholarship makes a significant difference to their ability to be able to attend uni.”
