The volunteer association, which commemorated their involvement in the community with an afternoon tea along with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), City Of Bayswater, state and local governments, SES Volunteer Association, SES Consultative Committee and more than 100 past and present members, is preparing for one of its hardest times of the year ” winter.

Bayswater SES local manager Andrae Moore said winter was one of the busiest times of the year for volunteers but there were certain things the community could do to keep safe and avoid dangerous situations.

‘Before a storm hits we suggest checking gutters and roofs for loose materials or damage, so clearing them and checking for blockages,’ Ms Moore said.

She also advised trimming branches near the home, clearing property of objects likely to be blown away by strong winds and putting together a storm kit with torches, a radio, spare batteries, first aid kit and emergency phone numbers.

She added that having a planned evacuation and relocation point and listening to storm updates through social media, radio and television outlets was crucial during major storms.
