Still a fair way to go

With a love of sport still coursing through their veins, it is no wonder the Maylands Veterans Golf Club members look at home on their local green.

And despite their solid reputations in the sporting arena, the former West Perth Football Club players were humble when sharing their handicaps.

‘For 18 holes I’m on 21 but the best I ever got to was 8,’ Mr Harman said.

‘But it’s not the golf it’s the company ” they’re a great crowd.’

Mr Harman scored his first game in the WA Football League 1949 and played the whole year before succumbing to injury.

It was with West Perth that he got his first taste of golf.

‘In 1949 we were to play the winners for the grand final and we were going to go to the game but the coach said ‘no you’re not, you’re going out to Wembley to play golf”
