Support for accountable government

Julian WrightEastern Reporter

Cr Gangell voted in support of the motion put forward by City of Vincent Mayor John Carey last Wednesday.

"I was of the mind that local government should not be a closed shop to ratepayers and stakeholders," Cr Gangell said.

"It should not take a scandal for us to look at this issue."

Cr Gangell said he also supported recording council meetings and streaming meetings online.

He said he was disappointed the motion was not passed.

"I can understand why the others were strongly against it but I thought it would have the support from the majority," he said.

Bassendean Councillor Gerry Pule voted against the motion.

"I support transparency but I voted against because the motion was not focused on the right legislation and the clauses were so ambiguous and lacked clarity," he said.

"Furthermore, councils already have, or can implement, these transparencies on their codes of conduct."

A City of Stirling spokesman said they were unable to comment on the matter.
