Swan Districts stalwarts Ames and Crowley hang up boots after finals defeat

Belinda CiprianoEastern Reporter

SWAN Districts captain Tallan Ames and teammate Ryan Crowley hung up their boots after losing to South Fremantle in the WAFL semi-final 136-56 at Fremantle Oval on Sunday.

The duo joined coach Greg Harding, who retired after seven seasons at the club.

Ames leaves a 263-game WAFL career where the long-serving captain became a premiership player, fairest and best winner and a life member.

Crowley, a former Fremantle and Essendon midfielder, played 196 AFL games and gave the club a boost after a poor 2016 season.

Ames who had a quiet game against the Bulldogs, told the Eastern Reporter his career highlights included the 2010 premiership, 2011 best and fairest, three State games and one national game.

The 33-year-old defender arrived at the club in 2000 and played in the colts before making his senior debut in 2002.

Crowley, who was one of the shining lights for the Swannies with 29 possessions and three goals in the 80-point drubbing, told the Eastern Reporter he had enjoyed his time at the club.

“It was a whole different ball game, playing footy that’s not full-time; it was my first time doing this and I enjoyed getting the enjoyment back,” he said.

Harding took the Swans to 66 wins and 73 losses.

Crowley was among the best on ground for the Black Ducks, along with Tony Notte, Todd Banfield and Kirk Ugle.

A club spokesman said the loss was not the way the club wanted to end the season but they would return bigger and better in 2018.
