THE Town of Bassendean’s first electric car charging station has been unveiled at the James Street public carpark.

Mayor Rene McLennan opened the free car charger, which is capable of supporting type 1 and 2 charging cables, on December 1.

Cr McLennan said it was an important step in the Town’s ongoing commitment to promoting the use of electric cars through sustainable initiatives.

“Electric vehicles produce zero exhaust emissions, cause less noise pollution, have lower running costs over conventional petrol or diesel cars and are better for the environment – especially when charged from renewable energy sources,” she said.

“Although Australia is currently lagging behind many other countries in the uptake of electric vehicles, in the next few years we will see many more on our streets as electric vehicle technology establishes a cost advantage over internal combustion cars.

“Research has shown that the most significant barrier to Australian’s going electric is the current lack of public recharging facilities.”
