Town of Bassendean seeking members to join suicide prevention working group

Kristie LimEastern Reporter

THE Town of Bassendean is inviting residents and mental health experts to join its first suicide prevention working group.

This initiative followed data released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare last year which showed the Town had the highest suicide rate in the Perth metropolitan area.

The rate was 26.7 deaths a year per 100,000 people between 2012 and 2016.

The group will appoint a councillor, representatives of mental health organisations and people who have skills, experience and interest in reducing incidents of mental health disorders in the community to the group.

Its objectives include raising awareness of resources that support positive mental health and suicide prevention, build community understanding to reduce stigma associated with suicide, review research and develop materials and programs.

Nominations are open until February 8, with forms available on the Town’s website.
