THE beauty of the female body mirrored by the sensual lines of classic and Formula 1 cars forms the basis of Bassendean artist Stephanie Roberts’ art exhibition “Powerful Cars and Woman Power.”
Ms Roberts said a fancy dress party with a superheroes and villains theme was the inspiration behind the exhibition, which opens at Cork and Bottle Wine Bar in Bassendean on Thursday.
“I didn’t want to just turn up as another Wonder Woman or Cat Woman so attracted by the crossover of feminine and killer machine gun breasts, I decided to transform an old bra,” she said.

During the process of constructing the costume using many old Triumph car parts and even bits of Ikea lighting, Ms Roberts said there was a correlation between the strength and attraction inherent in car engineering and design and the appreciation of female nature and form.
The creation of the costume triggered a further exploration of what is often the inspiration behind the car – a woman.
“A lot of music famously references the connection between cars and woman,” she said.
“The lyrics to The Doors’ ‘Roadhouse Blues’, AC/DC’s ‘You Shook Me all Night Long’ are just two examples,” said Stephanie.
“The woman is portrayed as adventurous, sensual, strong and desirable and, of course, females have literally and symbolically been referenced in the advertising and promotion of cars over the decades.
“Thinking along these lines, we can also appreciate the female body not only in terms of sexual attraction but also as a vehicle capable of carrying life and continuing a mutual journey between male and female.”
The exhibition will be on display until mid October.
