UWA student raises awareness about organ donation through internship

Kristie LimEastern Reporter

A UNIVERSITY of WA student has helped raised awareness for organ and tissue donation through an internship with the Organ Donation and Transplant Foundation of WA in Bayswater.

The foundation provides information and services that promote organ and tissue donation to the WA community.

Elizabeth Foster, who is part of UWA’s McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship program, targeted weekend hotspots including Bunnings sausage sizzles and organised stalls for the foundation to reach out to the community.

Ms Foster said she had little knowledge about fundraising but soon learnt about ways to fundraise and research events.

“The internship was a way to get involved with the community in a way I probably never would have otherwise,” she said.

“I learnt that one organ and tissue donor can save the lives of up to 10 people, which has a significant impact on their families and their future, and this had an effect on me.

“There isn’t enough awareness to make people want to become a donor.”

Since 2016, the McCusker Centre for Citizenship contributed about 45,000 hours in community service.
