Volunteers win community citizen awards

VOLUNTEERS and an event organiser took out the main categories at the Town of Bassendean’s Community Citizen of the Year Awards on Sunday.

Local resident Gina Ogilvie was named Community Citizen of the Year for her dedication to running the Free Little Library, providing environment workshops and volunteering at verge planting events, community events and the repair cafe.

Eden Hill Little Athletics Club volunteer Stella Turner won the Senior Community Citizen of the Year category for her working in the community for 35 years.

The 2019 WonderRealm Bassendean Fringe World Festival, run by local resident Nella Fitzgerald, took home the Active Citizenship award.

Other finalists, including Eden Hill Fathering Group founder Jeremy Warnock, Cyril Jackson Arts House Community Garden co-ordinator None Jekabsons, Bassendean Galaxy Basketball Club member Ngaire Kasdorf, Bassendean resident Michael Grogan and local volunteer Marion Arundel, were also recognised.

Mayor Renee McLennan said the awards were an ideal way to recognise and thank community members who invested their time and effort for people to enjoy “quality of life.”
