WA Academy of Performing Arts student Julia Newsome wants to support those affected by cancer through a fairytale-themed gala concert.
The Maylands resident has organised a concert, titled Fairytales and Beyond: A Gala Concert for Cancer, to raise funds for the Cancer Council of WA.
There will also be a puppeteer performance, grazing table, silent auctions and raffle tickets.
Ms Newsome wanted to reach out to the community after she recently lost a close family member and friend to cancer.
“This is the very first time doing anything like this,” she said.
“The main message is that cancer effects everyone and it is not necessarily within your immediate family or friends circle.
“It would just be nice as a community to get together and support those people in the community that are suffering from cancer or has past (away).”
She said the topic of cancer was almost “taboo” to be talked about.
“I think it is because most of the time, unless you have been given a good prognosis, it is kind of hard to talk about it,” she said.
“Not many people would know how to support someone that is in complete agony or losing their hair because of treatment.
“I think most cancer patients end up having a very hopeless view and also a sense of isolation.”
She hoped to raise $5000 and attract 150 people to attend.
