Local still best

Big is not necessarily better.

Local governments (or even state and national governments come to that) are not production factories where economies of scale reduce costs.

I used to live in Maylands. This small local council actually did a very effective job of maintaining the amenities and creating new ones for the local population.

It was amalgamated with Bayswater and almost immediately costs went up and service went down.

It’s now proposed that my local area, another small council doing a tremendously good job, is swallowed as part of a behemoth its ratepayers don’t wish to join.

It is time politicians of all persuasions were reminded that they are our servants, not we theirs.

They may forget this but we ratepayers and citizens should not.
