Council Meetings Open: Bassendean

MR Gerry Coleman (Nothing new, Eastern Reporter, February 16) misunderstood my complaint about the councillors going behind closed doors.

Mr Coleman is quite correct that during my time as mayor we also went behind closed doors, but only for very specific issues.

Our meetings were out in the open; the public were witness to the debate and all issues were decided in the chamber, hence the fact that at times we were still at meetings until midnight.

The council in my time (with few exceptions) was inclusive, as it should be.

Councillors must never forget the people have trusted them with the task of administering the affairs of the Town, but it requires consultation with the community particularly on important issues such as the redevelopment of the Oval.

Good governance embraces open debate and accountability.
