There is recognition our flora and fauna must be protected by way of a local planning policy and the formulation of the Bassendean Tree Consultative Committee consisting of councillors and committed community members.

Mayor John Gangell was a member and chaired this committee until recently when he resigned.

But we may well ask why join when there is doubt he cares, making the discourteous comments about trees being sticks (Axing for two council box trees raises ire, Eastern Reporter, June 4).

That comment is offensive to many in our community. Interested local groups passionately guard Bassendean’s attraction for its flora and fauna.

Mayor Gangell may well think that development is everything but if it diminishes the many benefits that flora and fauna provide then it is fruitless.
