Opinion: Efforts to change Australia Day ‘obscene’

Leslie Cummings, MorelyEastern Reporter

I roundly condemn the City of Fremantle and Mayor Brad Pettit for their small-minded and mean efforts to change our Australia Day celebrations, which have always been welcomed and supported by the majority of people living in our multi-cultured nation.

As Aboriginal and those who claim to be Aboriginals make up about 3 per cent of Australia’s population, did the ratepayers and citizens of Fremantle vote unanimously in favour of this obscene decision?

Attempting to change our history by suggesting the memorial of names and statues change because they might offend a few people is quite ridiculous considering that the Aboriginals and the British fought a war in which both parties killed each other.
