Labour Needs to Take an Interest in Bassendean

Janice TeoEastern Reporter

BASSENDEAN is a known safe Labor seat, which could account for the State Liberal Government attempting to locate many controversial projects here, such as a woman’s prison, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre, and most recently a disability justice centre.

The Government is now attempting to locate up to 400 units in three to five-storey blocks on Swan Districts’ footy oval, and another several 100 on our parks, reserves, car parks and heritage precinct, some of which have already been approved.

A lot of the Bassendean community is furious over these proposals, yet not a squeak from our safe-seated Labor politicians.

Local politician Dave Kelly seems to be sitting on the fence and when I spoke to Labor leader Mark McGowan at the Bassendean night markets recently he told me that he was learning about the developments only that night and was still forming an opinion.

I think it is about time our Labor politicians started taking an interest because this could be an election issue.
