A HOUSING design competition will explore innovative and creative solutions to the challenges of Perth infill development.

LandCorp’s Step Up Affordable Housing Design Competition is challenging WA architects, designers and builders to create cost-effective, accessible and sustainable medium-density housing.

The WA government land and development agency is seeking affordable, practical designs optimising new building technologies without compromising liveability or design quality.

Climate-responsive design, innovative materials and products to achieve high levels of energy and water efficiency, and measures to reduce ongoing running costs are significant judging criteria.

The competition will comprise three design phases, with the winning entry to be built at the Shoreline development at Cockburn Coast.

Lands Minister Terry Redman said the Government had a critical role to play in supporting innovative solutions to the challenges of rapid population growth and housing affordability.

“We are committed to finding new ways to live sustainably in our cities and towns by continuing to develop a wider range of affordable housing solutions in the Perth metro area,” he said.

“By 2050, we anticipate the Perth and Peel region will reach a population of 3.5 million people, so we need to plan for the future of our city now.”

Submissions for design phase one close at 2pm on August 31.
