New Oswald Homes display reinvents mid-century designs with modern twist

Natalie HordovEastern Reporter

Designed for family living, the four-bedroom, three-bathroom The MCM brings together vast expanses of glass and a sweeping skillion roof, with stone and timber feature elements.

The stylish interior highlights vintage trends including delicately patterned wall tiles and hazelnut-coloured, wood-grain cabinetry.

The integrated furniture that typified mid-century modern designs has also been reinterpreted and made wonderfully current.

Principal designer Brook Leber said The MCM was an opportunity to not only showcase a style that was prevalent in Perth in the 1950s and 1960s, but to also bring it bang up-to-date.

“Mid-century modern is a style that we have a passion for, but we wanted to reinvent it for the modern age,” he said.

“Working with a site of just over 1000sq m meant we had the luxury of designing for what is essentially the old quarter-acre block with north to the rear.

“The result is a large single-storey design incorporating passive solar design principals, multi-generational living and universal access.

“It may have a retro twist, but this is very much an up-to-the-minute design that still sits comfortably in Perth’s established suburbs.”

Wrapping around a pool, garden and alfresco, The MCM’s multi-generational floor plan includes a guest suite, home office, theatre room and garage parking for four cars.

The home can be built as a ‘turnkey option’ for under $1.5 million, including landscaping, pool, airconditioning, fitted wardrobes, in-floor heating, double glazing, smart wiring, security system, Miele kitchen appliances, floor tiles, carpets, skylight to the scullery, feature light fittings, fireplace, Heat and Glo fire and alfresco kitchen.

The design will suit a 20m-wide block.

Mr Leber said Oswald clients were inspired by a range of styles, from cubist contemporary and edgy industrial, to traditional Hamptons and relaxed Coastal Plantation.

“As a custom home builder, Oswald Homes is not pigeonholed by any one particular style of residential design, allowing us to explore our clients’ different tastes and inspirations,” he said.

The MCM is located at 19 Riley Road, Claremont and is open for viewing on Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm-4pm.
