WHILE some people prioritise a big block, separation from your neighbours and a nice backyard, there are others who appreciate the perks of life in a unit or apartment.

Many complexes now have fantastic facilities including pools, gyms and entertaining areas.

Coupled with the fact a unit is cheaper than a stand-alone house, and it’s easy to see why people make the choice.

Here’s a list of Perth’s cheapest suburbs for unit rentals.

5. Osborne Park

Osborne Park kicks off the list at number five, with a median unit rent of $250 per week. The well-established suburb is located eight kilometres north-west of Perth and has improved in affordability for tenants by $35 per week when compared to the year to August 2016. Close to Innaloo shopping centre, Osborne Park offers its residents a suburban lifestyle near all major amenities. It takes landlords on average 58 days to find a tenant for their rental, which is two days faster than it took in the year to August 2016.

4. Wembley

Prospective tenants looking to rent a unit closer to the city, should look to Wembley. Just seven kilometres west of the Perth CBD, Wembley is Perth’s fourth most affordable suburb for median unit rent, on par with Armadale at $250 per week for the three months to August 2017. Unit prices in the suburb have become more affordable by $20 per week over the last year and it takes on average 59 days for a landlord to find a tenant in the area.

3. Armadale

Armadale is Perth’s third-most affordable suburb for unit rentals, with a median rent price of $250 per week. The south-east suburb is located 25 kilometres from Perth and is the growing regional centre of the City of Armadale. It was marginally more affordable to rent in Armadale in the year to August 2017 than it was in the year to August 2016, with the median unit rent declining by $14 over this time. It takes landlords approximately 68 days to find a tenant for their rental unit in Armadale.

2. Orelia

Situated 38 kilometres south of Perth in the City of Kwinana, Orelia takes out second spot, with a median unit price of $210 per week for the three months to August 2017. Rent prices in the area have improved in affordability by $10 per week over the year and it takes landlords in the area approximately 55 days to find a tenant, five days faster than the same time last year. Close to the Kwinana train line and shopping centre, Orelia offers residents a quintessential suburban lifestyle close to a range of amenities, parks and recreational facilities.

1. Shoalwater

Shoalwater is Perth’s most affordable suburb for median unit rent, with tenants able to secure a unit in the area for approximately $200 per week in the three months to August 2017. Rent prices for units have seen a steep decline over the last year, having reduced by $100 per week when compared to the year to August 2016. Located 41 kilometres from Perth in the City of Rockingham, Shoalwater is a desirable location for families, due to its proximity to the beach, schools, amenities, local parks and playgrounds.
