A BALLAJURA taekwondo athlete has followed his grandfather’s footsteps after winning a silver medal at an international championship in Malaysia last month.

John Fairbrass (10) of SMART Martial Arts and Taekwondo in Ballajura flew to Kuala Lumpur with 15 club members to compete in the 2016 SMART International Championships.

He finished second in the poomsae (patterns) discipline in his first overseas competition while his grandfather David also won a gold medal for poomsae.

Master David Fairbrass, who is a 20-year veteran, said his grandson had done taekwondo for three years.

“It was a very proud moment especially as he had worked so hard doing all the training for it,” he said.

“We are all proud that John has not only followed in my footsteps but also his mother’s as she is a 2nd Dan Black Belt herself.

“John is only 10 years old but if he keeps going the potential is there as he is very dedicated.”

Fairbrass said John was preparing for his black belt test in late December.
